Cairns International Airport Transformation
PROGRESS | Work is well underway on the next stage of our $55 million international terminal upgrade, including preparations for new baggage belts set to streamline passengers’ arrival.
The new belts will be much larger than those currently in operation, meaning luggage from arriving widebody flights will no longer need to be separated across multiple carousels. The area is also being expanded to enable improved passenger flow.
“All of these improvements are aimed at simplifying and expediting the arrivals process for passengers,” Cairns Airport Chief Executive Officer Richard Barker said.
“Our international services continue to grow and we are doing the work to enhance our infrastructure in step with these developments."
The first stage of works is already complete, which produced a total transformation of our check-in and arrivals halls, including new elevators and escalators, upgraded bathrooms and parent rooms, modern furniture, fresh tiled floors and replacement of all check-in counters.
We have also installed four new airconditioned glass airbridges, which offer travellers a panoramic view of our mountains and waterways as soon as they land.
The redevelopment is due for completion at the end of 2025. This video is a great snapshot of the progress so far!

Brisbane Airport's new look: the art of airport interior design | June 2024
Sustainability is a core principle of the Future BNE project. Angela Spillane, Principal at Studio Spillane, has been instrumental in integrating sustainable design practices into the projects.
“All of the furniture in the refreshed southern end of the Domestic Terminal is Australian-designed and made, which supports local designers and reduces the carbon footprint associated with shipping,” Angela said.
The interior redesign extends beyond aesthetics to improve functionality and passenger comfort.
“We want people to engage with the space comfortably, whether they are socialising, eating, reading, or working.”

Sustainably Made Design Panel
Sustainably Made Design Panel
On Saturday, June 8, 2024, as part of Queensland Day celebrations, we hosted a special event showcasing the incredible design talent in our state. Starting with a series of workshops and finishing with a thought-provoking panel discussion on "Sustainably Made Design in Queensland."
This panel brought together some of Queensland's most innovative and influential women in design to explore crucial questions about sustainability, longevity, and local production in our industry. In a world dominated by fast fashion and mass consumption, our panelists shared their unique perspectives on creating furniture and objects built to last, supporting local industries, and building a circular economy.
The discussion, moderated by interior designer Angela Spillane of studiospillane, featured an esteemed lineup of Queensland designers and makers:
Clare Kennedy (Five Mile Radius)
Professor Beck Davis (QCAD)
Shari Lyon (Fluxwood Lighting)
Paivi Piotto (Ebb&Flow)
Karina Seljak (Seljak Brand)
These industry leaders shared insights into their sustainable design practices and the transformative impact of their work on Queensland's design landscape. Topics covered included innovative use of materials, supporting local supply chains, and strategies for extending product lifecycles.

Gather Bistro
‘Gather Bistro’s curved, asymmetrical space has given the team a quirky footprint (which includes a sizeable alfresco space beneath the building’s undercroft) to play around with. Angela Spillane from Studio Spillane and Unita has worked with the team on the design and fit-out, which makes use of a natural palette of materials and plenty of colour – think recycled concrete, earthy stone, brass and pink tiling – across the interior.
“It’s such a unique venue, where no side is the same,” says Jack. “It comes down to the joinery, benches, tables – no matter where you look at it, it looks different. It’s a very challenging shape to work with, this horseshoe shape. We’ve made it our advantage by having an open kitchen as the centrepiece. We can divide the venue into multiple styles. It’s very useable.”
______
“Heritage Lanes, the brand-new (Ann St) building created by Mirvac Group and M&G Real Estate is slowly inching its way towards its completion. While a few corporate entities already call Heritage Lanes home, its street-level hospitality component is just starting to take shape. Gather Bistro will open at Heritage Lanes in September, adding an accessible spot to nab Five Senses coffee and modern Australian-inspired eats.
… Within the glazed-glass exterior, work on the fit-out (undertaken by Unita) has already begun. Angela Spillane from Studio Spillane is working with the team on the interior design, which will make use of a natural palette of materials and plenty of colour – think recycled concrete, earthy stone, brass and pops of pink”.

BNE continues the evolution of airport dining
“We are very pleased to announce the next stage in the evolution of Brisbane Airport’s Food and Beverage offer. It's been amazing to see the incredible bounce back of domestic travellers post-COVID, and the fervour in which they have taken to the new cuisines and offers we released in the Northern Terminal in 2019.
"We will build upon this and take the offer to the next level again, with the release of not only these 10 F&B sites, but the integration and upgrade of gate lounge seating. This will create an improved customer experience for all passengers travelling through the Domestic Terminal.”

“The larger, abundant canvas could easily have veered out of control, but restraint is the key and clever manipulation of scale and texture has resulted in a calm delight”.

Urbane
“The Urbane redevelopment has created different but linked experiences within the one building. All four venues are arranged around a substantial kitchen hub designed to provide for a full range of food types from fine dining bistro and bar cuisine.
The spaces all have a comfortable, cosy feel to them and thoughtful, understate design prevails. ‘It was never going to be a white-on-white kind of restaurant,’ says (Spillane). ‘It was always planned to be quite textured – and fun to be within’.”

Brisbane Festival
“(Brisbane Festival artistic director David Berthold) called in leading Brisbane based architecture and interior design firm Arkhefield who conceptualised an interactive village in two months flat. Arkhefield practice director Angela (Spillane) says that Arcadia ‘will create a place for people to experience Brisbane Festival in a unique and memorable atmosphere’.”
Artichoke Interview
“While (Spillane) is aware that food comes first in the design equation, the context and surrounds are given supreme roles. ‘The chair is very important,’ she says. ‘People sit for hours at a time so you have to get it right’. How to frame, illuminate and surround the plate on the table must be equally beguiling, while the kitchen design must be in collaboration with the chef. ‘The idea of ‘build and they follow’ simply doesn’t work’. says (Spillane). ‘It’s a very collaborative effort between the client, the chef, the branding consultants and the designers right from the word go. The brand takes on a life of its own and exists long after the designer has left’.”
